Korel Tunador - Members Spotlight

Where in the world are you based?

I reside in Ojai, CA / Los Angeles CA where I teach primarily online.

Fill in the blank: Singing is . .

“Singing is ..... like flying from the inside out.”

What is one accomplishment (big or small) you are proud of as a coach?

I love when I see clients that began in a very fledgling state, who are now releasing their own original material and sounding great as vocalists!

Is there a tool, mindset, or strategy you’ve embraced that has made a positive impact on your studio or clients?

I’m not sure that it’s a conscious strategy, but much like ViP, I don’t approach it as a hierarchy. I do “teach”, but it feels to me like I am much more an experienced teammate. So my clients’ personal wins totally excite me, and overall, it’s FUN.

What drew you to become a ViP member?

I was a brand new teacher with literally only a few weeks under my belt when I was invited to my first ViP conference. I was welcomed as a peer with open arms and invited to learn with everyone. To be a good teacher, there are so many aspects that need to be addressed, and there is so much spurious information out there in the world. I knew that I had found the perfect place for me to continue learning from trustworthy sources. And equally as important, the culture of ViP is such that I always felt understood and encouraged.

What has been your favorite EdHub presentation so far? What particularly interested you about it, or what did you learn from it?

I love MANY of them. I always appreciate Justin Stoney’s presentations because in addition to his depth of knowledge and the priority has of clearly communicating, both with us and his clients, he radiates energy like a Tesla coil which makes for a pretty fun Zoom session.

I also really gravitate to Kittie Verdolini and Emily Jackson when they present on motor learning theory.

Do you have a coaching specialty?

I enjoy what I view as “cross training". In addition to technique I like to incorporate overall musicality into sessions as appropriate.

Some clients have added guitar and piano to their skills and I coach most clients in ear training, which I consider all-important.

I am teaching more theory and harmony to some jazz singers I work with so they can learn to improvise in the same way their instrumentalist band members do. And with other clients, I have helped them to craft their song writing and produce their original songs for release.

Which of our 7 Principles resonates with you most and why?

Well, I would usually default to say Voice Science, because a big part of me is always yearning for objective truths that can be applied to solve issues and derive a desired outcome.

But lately the very subjective and crucial aspects of Artistry and the application of Pedagogy are sparking joy, since those centre more around communication, which, after all, is the entire point of what we do as musicians.

Are there any particular areas of interest or research about voice that you love discussing?

Ha, as a student of teaching and observer of all the experts we have presenting, I’ll just give an overall “Yes”.

Tell us a funny fact about yourself.

I have 3 left feet.

Do you also perform? If so, do you have anything to share about some of the things you have been up to recently?

I perform my original solo material in the area, though for my original music, my focus is primarily on recording in my studio. I also perform and tour with the pop/rock singer Rob Thomas, which is a wonderful musical outlet with great friends.

Is there anything new or exciting happening for you that you would like us to share or promote?

My wife is a clinical hypnotherapist and life/business coach. We are fashioning a “Hypno- Songwriting” program where we will combine a lesson/challenge/prompt with a guided hypnosis to further engage the subconscious with the craft. If anyone is interested, just reach out and I’ll let you know when we launch it!

Are any of your clients (past or present) enjoying commercial success?

Yes, there are some doing wonderful work! I work with the singer of the American Emo band Senses Fail, have a client who plays and sings with Niall Horan, as well as clients from the American bands Lifehouse, Ministry, America, Whitesnake, and Katy Perry’s band.

I also had the great experience of working with a bonafide living legend rock vocalist for a year a while back, although an NDA and respect keep him off my “promo” list,, ugh!
