Q & A with Yuya Goto

This month we are delighted to be granted an audience with Vocology in Practice Authorized Instructor, Yuya Goto.

Where do you teach?

I teach online and in person at my studio “The Voice Expert” in Tokyo Japan. I offer lessons in Japanese and English.

Fill in the blank: “Singing is …..”

Singing is my joyful shout. It’s the blood that flows through my veins.

What is one accomplishment (big or small) you are proud of as a coach?

I have many  clients who are achieving great things. Amongst them are  members of Theatre Shiki (star level), Takarazuka Revue Company, major debuted Dance & amp; successful Vocal Groups, YouTubers,

and TikTokers. I am really proud that I have been able to help these singers overcome various vocal difficulties and that we continue to work together.

Is there a tool, mindset, or strategy you’ve embraced that has made a
positive impact on your studio or clients?

Diving deep into Musicianship and artistry. I work a lot with professional stage artists, uncovering their unique artistry and helping them translate that into mesmerizing performances that captivate their fans. But it's not all about the spotlight – honing fundamental vocal skills is key. Plus, my ongoing exploration of Voice Science has revolutionized my teaching approach, allowing me to offer even more to my students.

What drew you to become a ViP member?

A colleague who was already a member invited me.  I was interested in the further study of Vocology and ViP offered me just that.

What has been your favourite EdHub presentation so far? What particularly
interested you about it, or what did you learn from it?

I really enjoyed the Advanced Certificate Course in January with Johan Sundberg. I learnt a lot about nasal resonance and in addition Johan presented a lot of exclusive and interesting information on formants.

Which of our 7 Principles resonate with you most and why?

Musicianship! In my experience up to now I have found that many other Voice Teaching organizations only mention Vocal Theory. ViP offers so much more and shares a lot of expertise in the performance and style aspects of contemporary singing.

Are there any particular areas of interest or research about voice that you
love discussing?

I am currently very interested in Belting.

I would really enjoy the opportunity to hear what practical exercises and strategies my expert colleagues in ViP use with their singers.

Is there anything new or exciting happening for you that you would like us to share or promote?

Many traditional Japanese vocal coaches give lessons that are not based on vocal science but on their perception. I of course respect this, but I am so excited to present lessons in Japan that use evidence based theory to make lessons more effective.

Are any of your clients (past or present) enjoying commercial success?

I am very pleased to say yes. Many of my clients are successful in auditions and are enjoying professional musical theatre careers or making major label debuts.
