This month we are delighted to be granted an audience with Allie Moss. Allie is a Vocology in Practice Authorized Instructor and a current Board Member.
Where in the world are you based?
I reside and teach in New Orleans, sometimes LA, and also teach online.
Fill in the blank: Singing is . . .
“Singing is life, Singing is athletic, Singing is healing.”
What is one accomplishment (big or small) you are proud of as a coach? I’ve had the joy of working with a few producers who came to lessons wanting to learn to sing their own tracks. Helping them understand their instrument, embrace the title of ‘singer,’ and confidently release music with their own voice on it is a proud moment!
Is there a tool, mindset, or strategy you’ve embraced that has made a positive impact on your studio or clients?
I’m patient and slow in my own practice, but this last year realized I was putting pressure on myself to show fast results in a lesson environment. I’ve seen a positive shift in results since I’ve actively slowed down my approach.
What drew you to become a ViP member?
Community and ongoing education. I love being part of a group of like-minded coaches and creatives instead of alone in my bubble of solo teaching!
What has been your favorite EdHub presentation so far? What particularly interested you about it, or what did you learn from it?
I loved the Kerrie Obert 2022 class on Twang and Chris Johnson’s recent Resonance Strategies class. Another recent favorite was Kaya’s class “IGNITE, MOTIVATE, CREATE, EDUCATE, EVALUATE, AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN,” which helped me with the above-mentioned slowing down. Shout out to the Team Teaches as well! I enjoy learning from the wealth of knowledge in my ViP colleagues and the practical application of all we talk about in ViP.
Do you have a coaching specialty?
I primarily work with artists and songwriters to develop their style, supported by a healthy vocal approach and practice. I also do a lot of harmony arranging, ear training, and songwriting with my clients. I co-lead a songwriting community called Thinking Outside the Blocks, where we often discuss creative mindset.
Which of our 7 Principles resonates with you most and why?
Artistry and Musicianship are my wheelhouses, but Voice Science and Business Practices were my weakest areas when I joined, so I’ll say those because I love continuing to grow as both a coach, singer, and entrepreneur.
Are there any particular areas of interest or research about voice that you love discussing?
I am a nerd for anything harmony or nervous system mind-body-related.
Tell us a funny fact about yourself.
I’m ambidextrous! Guitar feels good as a righty because dexterity of the chords is in the left hand, which I write with, and rhythm is in the right hand, which I tend to use for most sports.
Do you also perform? If so, do you have anything to share about some of the things you have been up to recently?
I have an artist project under my own name and released a song called “Trying” in June. I have a duet called “Cold Cold Season” coming out in November. I performed with Ingrid Michaelson at Carnegie Hall twice in the last year–a career highlight!
Are any of your clients (past or present) enjoying commercial success? My client Valley James recently signed with management and a booking agent, and has a beautiful record and tour dates coming soon. One to watch!
